Molyneux frustrated at missed chances in Accrington draw

5 November 2023

Luke Molyneux bemoaned missed chances including his own as Rovers were pegged back by Accrington Stanley in the Emirates FA Cup.

Rovers dominated in the first half but only had a Kelvin Mellor own goal to show for their efforts as Molyneux and Mo Faal in particular failed to convert good opportunities.

Shaun Whalley equalised in the second half before Seamus Conneely cancelled out a stunning strike from Harrison Biggins to ensure a replay at the Wham Stadium.

“In the first half an hour we were really good and created a lot of clear cut chances,” Molyneux said. “I’ve definitely got to take my chance and Mo is a bit disappointed with his as well.

“That would have been 3-0 and game over. That’s just what football is like - if you don’t take your chances, it’ll come back to bite you.

“You want to get the job done first time but we’re still in the tie and we’ve got to go there and beat them.

“We know what type of team Accrington are and they’re good at first and second balls. We were good at that in the first half and they were a lot better at it in the second. We were trying to get through the momentum they had.”

Molyneux started the game just off Faal in a rejigged Rovers line-up.

He said: “I played a different position than I normally play but especially in the first half, I really enjoyed it.

“I got a lot of time on the ball and I was linking up the play well. In the second half it was more difficult, there wasn’t as much space and they did well to compact it.

“That’s when you’ve got to find different ways to get on the ball and to create chances.”
