Molyneux relishing McCann's calls for attacking freedom

2 January 2024

Luke Molyneux says Grant McCann’s desire for Rovers to keep the foot on the gas is music to his ears.

McCann has urged his players to continually push for more goals, with the 3-0 win over MK Dons on New Year’s Day featuring a perfect illustration of what he is looking for his side to do.

And Molyneux - who opened the scoring against Milton Keynes - is relishing the attacking freedom the Rovers boss is giving the group.

“We had a good performance against Mansfield that we needed to build on and I think we did that,” he told the media after the game.

“The manager gets into us about it. Even when we were 3-0 up at half time, he still got into us and wants us to be better. I feel like that’s what we need to push us on.

“He wanted us to get things right and keep on, scoring more goals. He doesn’t want to settle for a 3-0. He wants us to go for more.

“In the second half, we held back a bit. They had a lot of the ball and we were happy for them to have it in front of us. We just struggled to get on the ball as well as we did in the first half. I feel like that’s always going to happen when you’re 3-0 up and comfortable but we need to get in that mindset of pushing for more goals.

“It can be tough but we’re a fit set of lads and we’ve shown that we can do it right to the end. We need to not settle and put the opposition to the sword.

“It was a good start to the new year. Everyone was at it. We were good on the counterattack and on the press. We got the ball back off them quite a few times and broke on them. And we were clinical in the final third. I thought it was good.”
