We need to defend better collectively: Olowu

26 February 2023

Joseph Olowu says it is down to Rovers to defend better collectively and avoid conceding the sort of goal which led to their defeat against Bradford City.

Andy Cook headed home the only goal of the game from a corner as Rovers were caught out to end up on the losing side of a very tight affair at the Eco-Power Stadium.

Olowu on how the game played out:

“I think in between both boxes, we created good chances, we tried to implement the way we want to play on the game. Of course we would like to create more chances but I think it is for us to defend more collectively in trying to manage moments and tip moments into our favour.

On creating chances to score:

“I don’t think it’s a struggle to create chances. It’s something we’re aware of and we’re working on every single day in training as a collective. Building up play, getting into the opposition half and attacking their box - we’re working it well but it’s just for us to keep improving and keep doing what the gaffer wants us to. And keep believing that the more we work on it, the more chances that will come and the more we will turn chances into goals.”

On playing out from the back:

“We’ve got the ability to do it and it suits us well. We’re composed enough at the back to do it. The thinking and the decision-making keeps getting better and I think we’re picking the right passes and right moments to play out. That is how you’re seeing that progression from our goal to building up to theirs.”

On the goal conceded:

“I think it is just for us as a collective to be better in that moment. I simply comes down to that. They pride themselves on that - long balls, set pieces into the box and it’s for us to be better in that moment and tip the scales in our favour so next time we come out on top.

“There’s no pointing fingers. It’s about us collectively dealing with that better to make sure we defend that better.”

On the struggle to get back into the game:

“They managed the game well. As soon as they went 1-0 up, they tried to slow the game down and play it at their pace. We tried to get onto them to try to keep it up but it’s something that happens when a team like that goes 1-0 up. It’s tough to gain the momentum and go again.”

On the status of his facial injury:

“It’s good. I’ve taken a lot of contact to the face recently with a few nose bleeds here and there. I take that as the face mask holding up well and I’m getting through and enjoying it.”
