James Maxwell is excited by what the future holds with Schofield as head coach

26 October 2022

James Maxwell feels there is plenty of positives to take out of Rovers’ defeat to Stevenage in Sky Bet League Two.

Despite the loss, Rovers put in a commanding performance that warranted something out of the game in Danny Schofield’s first home match in charge. Maxwell believes the display is one Rovers can take a lot of heart from.

“Although we’ve only had three sessions with the head coach, we were confident in our style and knew we could take the game to Stevenage despite how tough they’ve been to beat this season,” he said.

“We had a lot of good spells throughout the game and the fans were great backing us.

“The players have really brought into what the gaffer is doing. He has left a really good first impression and you can see that we have belief in what we’re being told to do.

“On a personal note, it has been my two best back-to-back games in a Rovers shirt. I think me getting forward more often and the belief of the head coach has helped.”

Maxwell came close to scoring from one opportunity against Stevenage but saw his effort cleared off the line. He believes Schofield’s system will allow him to get forward more in games.

“We’ve still got a lot to learn about the gaffer’s style of play, but I think you can see from the Stevenage game that we’re picking it up fast and building something good,” he added.

“This system is good for me as it allows me to get forward, but I won’t let that be a disadvantage to my defensive duties as we want as many cleansheets as possible throughout the season.

“There have been a lot of positives to take despite the result.”
