Butler praises Rovers character

28 April 2021

Andy Butler praised his players’ character after they came from 2-0 down to draw at Peterborough United at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Goals from Joe Ward and Sammie Szmodics had put the home side in cruise control early on, before Rovers responded with strikes of their own from Fejiri Okenabirhie and Taylor Richards.

He said: “We didn’t start as well as we should have but we played some really good stuff after that and caused Peterborough some real problems.

“We had to change the team a little bit late on but I thought the players responded really well and applied themselves brilliantly.

“Our decision making let us down early on and we had to learn from that, we started to pick up pockets of space and became a threat.

After Rovers delayed Peterborough’s promotion to the second-tier for a few days at least, Butler says his side need to take heart from their performance.

He added: “The frustrating thing for me is seeing that performance after the ones that have come before it, we’ve shown we’re more than capable of challenging a team set to win promotion.

“Everyone was probably here to see Peterborough win promotion and it’s credit to the players for having the mindset of preventing that from happening.

“We came with a game plan of sitting off them a little bit and allowing them to have the ball, because if you try and go toe-to-toe with Peterborough they will pick you off.”
