REPORT | Hull City 1 Rovers 2

8 August 2023

A George Miller double saw Rovers dispose of Sky Bet Championship side Hull City to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup.

After falling behind just three minutes in, Rovers rallied with a superb performance to secure a deserved first ever win at the MKM Stadium.

They caused plenty of problems for the Tigers and could have won by a wider margin on an impressive night.

Grant McCann made six changes to the side that started the opening league game against Harrogate Town, including handing full debuts to wingers Deji Sotona and Tyler Roberts.

It was a disastrous start for Rovers as they found themselves behind inside the third minute. A pass out of defence was cut out in the middle of the park and fed forward to former Rovers winger Jason Lokilo, who was denied with a fine save by Ian Lawlor, only to push the ball across goal where Estupinan turned home.

But McCann’s side responded well and caused problems for the opposition with an attentive press.

And they grabbed the equaliser on 15 minutes after forcing an error. Luke Molyneux pounced on a misplaced pass and saw his shot deflect up off an outstretched leg before the ball dropped to Miller who slotted home superbly.

Rovers were the more threatening for the remainder of the first half. Miller touched the ball narrowly wide from the back post. And the striker diverted a rasping drive from George Broadbent narrowly wide moments later.

Tom Anderson - making his return from injury - bravely diverted a powerful Lokilo shot wide with his head. And the hosts went close on the half hour mark when Cyrus Christie turned a deep cross back towards goal and Estupinan flicked a header just off target.

Rovers finished the half well, camping in the opposition half. Broadbent sent a delicious ball over the top for Miller, whose initial touch allowed Hull keeper Matt Ingram to race out and smother the shot.

And Anderson headed wide from a corner in the last act of the half.

Lawlor produced a brilliant save three minutes into the second period as he hooked the ball off his line from a Estupinan header.

Sotona fired over the bar after a surging run forward before Rovers took the lead on 62 minutes.

Roberts cut the ball back from the byline to Harrison Biggins, who smashed a shot which Miller got in the way of to divert it home.

Anderson produced another brave block as he threw himself in front of Lokilo strike.

Lawlor was the Rovers hero in the later stages of the game. First, he raced off his line to save with his legs after Estupinan was flicked clear on goal.

And two minutes from the end of the 90, he made an even better stop. Hull substitute Ozan Tufan was put in one-on-one with a ball over the top from a free kick but Lawlor made a superb save.

Estupinan headed well over the bar as the game ticked into ten minutes added but Rovers held on for the victory.

Rovers: Lawlor, Bailey, Anderson, Olowu, Maxwell, Broadbent (Rowe 70), Biggins, Sotona (Westbrooke 78), Molyneux, Roberts, Miller (Ironside 86). Subs not used: Watson, Faulkner, Long, Senior, Brown, Griffiths.
